Veterinary Orthopaedics is an Australian owned, family operated business founded in 2017 based near Toowoomba, Queensland. We strive to create personal connections with our customers, delivering high quality and efficient service.
The combination of Tom's wealth of experience in the Veterinary industry and the drive for professional friendly service provided by Annie and the team means we have long standing relationships with both our customers and suppliers. We are continually evolving as we strive to meet and exceed our customer expectations.
Director And Specialist Surgeon
Tom Smith
Our co-founder and Director, Tom, is an American Boarded Small Animal Specialist Surgeon with over 25 years of experience working in first opinion, referral and academic settings.
Tom studied veterinary medicine at Cambridge University and has been involved in treating small animals ever since, with the latter two decades working as a referral small animal surgeon. Tom undertook an internship at Fitzpatrick Referrals (UK), a research assistant role at Michigan State University (Establishing point of principle gene transfer in bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells), prior to completing a three year small animal surgical residency at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University. Tom has been a recognised small animal surgical Specialist in Australia since 2012.
With this hands on knowledge and experience, Tom understands the importance of reliable inputs in the business. Tom is happy to provide specialist advice on implants and instruments. For specific advice, Tom is available to read radiographs and discuss case management with our customers where needed.
In his downtime, Tom enjoys relaxing with Annie, their cat Buss Buss and their two dogs Schnitzel and Poppi . In addition, Tom is involved in Competitive Target Rifle Shooting (to International Level), all grain beer brewing, cider making, poultry breeding, Landrover restoration and gardening.

Annie Smith
As a co-founder Annie looks after the day-to-day operations of our business, providing professional and friendly customer service. Annie has over 25 years experience as a CPA and brings a wealth of commercial and accounting experience to Veterinary Orthopaedics, and is always seeking ways to improve the business. Annie has extensive work experience across a variety of roles, having worked as an Accountant in Australia, the UK and US - having met Tom in the UK and travelling and living in Oregon in the US.
While numbers are one of her strengths, her desire to provide outstanding customer service and empathy and understanding of the complexities of running a business mean that Annie is more than well placed in ensuring customer expectations are met.
Annie is also committed to giving back to the community and has held the position of Treasurer of Protea Place Inc (a NFP providing support to vulnerable women in the Toowoomba Community) since Dec 22. In her spare time, Annie loves cooking, gardening and spending time with Tom and their four legged family members and catching up with friends and family over great food and wine.

Poppi and Schnitzel
Each order is processed under the strict supervision of Schnitzel and Poppi. They have all seasons covered with a variety of beds under the desk and work breaks usually involve ball throwing and walks - while the 10 hens and rooster (King Charles III) forage in the yard outside the office.
